This is a spherical discharge terminal I made for the improved junk box coil. It is a 12" diameter globe of the Earth ($1.25 at a junk sale) covered with aluminum foil stuck on with spray glue. I smoothed it down good with the back of a spoon until I achieved an almost chrome-like finish. With the 1080VA NST power supply, the sphere improved spark length a little, but also tended to create a single, giant spark that sort of waved around like a glowing serpent. It was very interesting to watch. On the new, improved junk box coil running with the twin MOT supply at over 3KVA, the output sparks from the sphere were too wild, with too many primary strikes and numerous strikes to the secondary. Clearly, the sphere lacks the shielding properties of the toroid.
