Our current transportation methods are slow. Really slow. I hate how I have to, say, go somewhere for a few hours (like a badminton tournament in another state) and I spend most of the time in the car. I mean, why waste all that time? The sense of futility you feel from having all that time simply slip away from you, whether you wait in a traffic or breeze along on the highway at 90 miles per hour, is simply overwhelming. I feel so helpless knowing that I am so far away from home and that it is at least two hours before I get there, knowing that all this time will be wasted doing nothing especially productive in the car. I don't want to get only a paltry 200 miles in three and a half hours when the time I will actually spend in that place 200 miles from home is a meager 5 hours. Furthermore, long trips are not only wasteful of a precious resource, they are boring! Hours and hours of tedium, driving along highways which look identical mile after mile... Airplanes are likewise slow. Maybe 3000 miles in six hours doesn't sound too slow to you, but just think about it! Not counting the distance, it's six hours. A lot can happen in six hours. You can do a lot in six hours, but noooo, you have to waste it all while up 37,000 feet in a metal tube with wings. It's boring and a waste of time, not to mention the horrible air quality, cramped conditions (in the cheap old economy class) and the processed crud they call food. I don't want to have to take six hours to get where I want to go (let alone those 12-18 hour flights across the world), I want to get there NOW Six hours is horrible, not to mention 13, 1 hour is tolerable, 30 minutes is acceptable, 5 seconds is more like it. Trouble is that the speed rises to insane levels with ever-decreasing travel times.
