What The Hell is a Nonlinear Dielectric and Why Should I Care?
It started for me when Richard Hull, esteemed
coiler of Richmond Virginia, found an interesting reference to "dielectric
amplifiers" in a 1950's vintage electronic magazine and was kind enough to
send me a copy. The material was very interesting. In 30 years of research, I
had never seen a single reference to dielectric amplifiers. No one else I have
talked to about the subject has either. Intrigued, I did a lot of research on
non-linear dielectrics and barium titanate, and collected some fascinating articles
on the subjects. Below are two interesting articles on dielectric amplifiers,
which will give the researcher a good idea of what dielectric amplifiers are
and how to build one. I see fantastic possibilities in using dielectric
amplifiers to drive a very robust Tesla coil, much like a vacuum tube Tesla
coil, sans the vacuum tube. John Freau, here's a worthy challenge for you! Oh
yes, one other thing. It looks like there is a very real possibility that one
can build a four-wave mixer/amplifier using a barium titanate cavity that would
operate at Tesla coil frequencies (see "Applications of Optical Phase
Conjugation" by David M. Pepper, Scientific American, 198x) . Yes,
Virginia, Santa wants to build a Tesla maser.
