Arcs around glassplate

The setup:

As you can see, we opened up the ballast completely. The current on the primary side (at 230V) in this arrangement with 34cm arclength was approx. 2A.

The big mystery is that the arcs won't made it around the glassplate if we remove the ballast. High frequency ringing (resonance) through the xfmrs?

On 6th August 2006 the Teslathon organisation team hold a workshop at Tonis house to discuss the last Teslathon2006. Toni couldn't attend the Teslathon, so we performed a small one the day after where we electrified the glass plate (again 34cm arcs around the edges):

You even can see the traces of the arcs on the glass plate after shutting off the power:
