Perhaps a better choice for a gnd might be sheet metal on a hard floor with a copper ribbon for the bridge, this should prevent tearing and crumpling etc. One problem (besides cost) to solve if you go this route will be making a good, air tight contact. I don't believe the poor RF qualities will make a difference if the surface area is so large.
