For the record, Another point to add now to this ongoing mystery, from Terry's recent NSVPI measurements. An effective input resistance of around 700 ohms against a Q factor of around 70 should be telling me something. The lack of any glitches or steps in the measured profiles pretty well rules out a spot defect, so whatever is keeping the Q factor down must be either external to the coil, or distributed along it.
