Hi Paul, I have often wondered whether the problem of matching a coil to an output spark isn't intractible. There is clearly a feedback mechanism at work. My thoughts to date is that the spark will choose its own impedance based on charge availability (amongst other variables no doubt) and then as I'm sure happens, alter the source impedance (change modes) in turn altering the spark impedance because of the now altered source characteristics. Then there is the question of defining the type of discharge ( single rooted air streamer, multiple air streamers, attached discharge and the dynamics that follow when a discharge finally does attach etc.) I consider it far from proven that the problem is impossible however.
