Subject: Re: [TSSP] Racing arcs

Hi Paul,

My measurements last night were with the toroid at 70" (center of
toroid). Remember that I had lowered it from 77" and got rid of the
racing arcs. Tonight, I tried to get back to square one by mounting the
toroid back to the original 77", but of course with the turns removed
from the bottom, coupling was lowered and I didn't get racing arcs. Here
are measurements with toroid at 77" as the coil is now.

Fres (w/toroid in place, w/pri at tap 14) = 69.8kHz.
Flow (63% amplitude below Fres) = 68.3kHz
Fhigh (63% amplitude above Fres) = 70.1kHz.

Primary tap at 14 (remeasured OD = 30.94", ID = 11", both at centers).
Primary tap inductance measured (no secondary in place): 106uH.

After these measurements, I ran the coil again with 180VAC input. There
were no racing arcs and the coil ran ok. Quantity of sparks were 2 to 3
at a time (sometimes 1). The sparks were of the thin type (compared to
the thick white arcs when the toroid was at 70" and higher coupled) but
they reached the wall easily (just enough to current to allow breakout.
Allowing more current brings the sparks to an unsafe distance. I'm only
8 feet away). Sparks breakout slightly above center of toroid.

Regarding the coupled mode frequency's. Should I be doing this with
everything hooked up and gap shorted? This is easy enough to do (their
there, just want to be sure of connection).

I think it would be a good idea to measure the primary freq without the
resonator system in place. I'll try to do that tonight at some point
just for the fun of it.

Take care,
Bart
